About FIUS
The Fabian Iloabueke Umeh Scholarships (FIUS) is a yearly scholarship aimed to support young people from the age of 10 – 35 years from Nigeria to surmount challenges of getting the right access to education. Starting from 2024, every year, at least 2 yearly scholarships would be issued to qualified candidates after passing the required assessments and/or interview depending on the discretion of the organizing committee. The expansion of the number of scholarship positions would be based on availability and support from partner institutions. The number of scholarship positions is planned to increase geometrically to ensure a wider reach for the less privileged with the right zeal and basic background to excel.
Our vision is to beable at least 10 million young people by the year 2050. The vision of scaling in the next 5 years includes covering sub-saharan Africa and entire Africa in general.
Prologue
The FIUS is a scholarship which has been founded by Ebuka Umeh to immortalize the age long ambition of Late Mr. Fabian Iloabueke Umeh, who died while training his children even with little resources he had because he didn’t have the opportunity to go to school. His premium desire was to be a lawyer but because of the circumstances surrounding his father’s resources and the norm after the Nigerian Civil War to go for apprenticeship in his time. He would rather go for apprenticeship, even though he finished his primary school with flying colors. In fact, his father told him to go and learn a trade since he could write a good letter at class 5. He had to relinquish his desired passion to seek for knowledge and going to school for apprenticeship. That he never forgot as he keeps speaking about till his demise. He believed that education could make a difference in the life of a young person with the right zeal. Even though, he didn’t achieve his aim to further his education, he was a very good writer and had a very good command of English language, in the midst of largely dominated Igbo language speakers. He started his search for wealth by investing in stocks at the mid – 70s. He rose as a transport manager in a transport management company, but he could not sustain the role because of the weighty demands that comes with skills for the role.
He ensured his children becomes the first lineage of full-fledged education in his lineage, thereby producing the first graduate in his entire lineage. He also provided sponsorship for the child of his siblings to encourage education as a marker that can bring leverage from poverty and liberation from ignorance. Despite his dedication,he died on 9th March 2013 after prolonged illness. He served as Vice Chairman ETD, NUPENG before his demise. The scholarship would cover the 3 cadre’s of education - Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels. The FIUS is geared towards targeting young people who had the similar challenges in a bid to be a better version of Fabian I. Umeh as per his desires.
